What is SEO?

SEO means: ‘search engine optimizations‘. If you have or manage a website, you want this website to appear in search engine results. Search engines have different ways to index websites. In this article you can read some important tips on how best to optimize your website for search engines.

Metatags

You can manage metatags in the head space of your HTML file.

TIP 1. Metatag ‘title’

The title tag is not directly visible on the web page but is displayed in the tab of the page.

title tag metatag

Use relevant text for the title tag. Make sure that the three most important keywords of the page are at the front.
The title tag can be up to 60 characters long. Make use of this space but make sure that the title tag is not too long. If the title tag becomes too long, it can be read as spam.

TIP 2. Metatag ‘description’

The metatag description does not directly affect the location of the search results, but displays a description of the page in the search results.

metatag description

Use a catchy text here to tempt the visitor to take a look at your website.
The length of the description tag can be up to 160 characters long.

TIP 3. Metatag ‘keywords’

Here you can enter the most important keywords that are relevant to the web page.
Unfortunately, there are few search engines that use this meta tag.
Keep using this meta tag. Every visitor is one again.

TIP 4. SSL certificate

Always ensure that you have a ssl certificate with your website. Not because a website with ssl certificate scores better but because a website without a ssl certificate scores worse. Sounds weird but a website without ssl certificate is now a thing of the past. If you want to score better than your competitors, then you definitely need a ssl certificate.

With a ssl certificate, visitors are better protected when entering, for example, login data. The visitor can also recognize a ssl certificate by the green lock in the address bar. It gives the visitor a safer feeling.

TIP 5. Domain name

Your domain name is very important for search engines. There are a number of rules that you can use to come up with a good domain name. That is why I added a list of dos and donts here.

Dos

  • invent an easy to remember domain name.
  • use one or two of the most important keywords of your website for the domain name.
  • if you want to use a separator, always use a dash and not more than one separator per domain name.
  • Keep your domain name so short as possible.
  • Use always the extension: ‘.com’ or the extension of your country.

Donts

  • Do not use underscores.
  • Do not make your domain name to long.
My personal assessment is a maximum length of 25 characters. But a shorter domain name is better.
  • Do not use numbers.
  • Do not use unknown extensions.

TIP 6. Subpages

The URL of a subpage is your domain name plus the way to the subpage.
Always ensure relevant names of sub-pages and folders in which the sub-pages are located. For example, use keywords that are relevant to the subpage.

Content

Content means the visible text on your website. The most important text is the h1 text.

TIP 7. <h1></h1>

Always use a h1 text on every web page. It is best for this text to use the three most important keywords that are relevant to the page.

TIP 8. <strong></strong> and <b></b>

The <strong> and <b> elements both display the text on the webpage in bold print.
But there is an important difference.
Search engines read the text that is placed in the <strong> element as an important text and that is not the case with the <b> element.

TIP 9. <em></em> and <i></i>

The same applies to the <em> and <i> elements. With both elements the text becomes oblique
printed.
Only the <em> element is considered an important text by search engines.

TIP 10. Use enough text

For a good indication of a web page, a search engine needs at least 250 words. Therefore use at least 250 words per page. Use in the text not only the keywords but also synonyms of the keywords.

Images

TIP 11. Image names

Give your web images relevant names. Use the dash as a separator if needed.

Example

For example, you can give this image as a name:
landscape-rising-sun-mountains.jpg

TIP 12. alt attributes

Always use the alt attributes.

The alt attribute is intended if the image is not displayed for some reason, as alternative text. Search engines use this text to index images.

Google

TIP 13.

Use google analytics. Google analytics is a free program that keeps visitors statistics of your website. You can easily link the program to your website.

TIP 14. Google Search Console

Also use google search console. With search console you can improve your website, check for broken links and pass on a sitemaps to google.

sitemap

TIP 15. Sitemap.xml

add a sitemap to your website. You place the sitemap in the root of your website.

If you have added a sitemap you also need to add a robots.txt file.
In the robots.txt file you write the following text:

User agent: *
allow / all

With using a sitemap, search engines can better crawl your website.

More information about Sitemaps can be found here: google sitemap

TIP 16. Usability

SEO is an important part of your website. Make sure you build your website for your target group and not just for search engines.

Usability is number 1

TIP 17. Don’t overdo

Only use the above tips where necessary. Do not do too much. If you exaggerate your website can be considered as spam.
